Getting medical travel insurance cover for your Leukaemia is probably the best way of protecting your medical condition should this cause any problem when on holiday. Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow, which occurs when immature white blood cells, known as blasts, are abnormally formed in huge numbers in the body. It is a treatable disease that usually involves chemotherapy, radiation therapy or bone marrow transplants.
The four main subtypes of Leukaemia include Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), Acute Lymphocytic Leukaemia (ALL), Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL).
AML requires urgent treatment. Starting in the bone marrow, the aggressive cancer of the myeloid cells can normally be treated initially by chemotherapy, sometimes followed by a stem cell transplant.
ALL develops from immature forms of lymphocytes. Treatment is normally chemotherapy based to put the ALL into a remission with maintenance treatment for 2 years.
CML develops over a few years; starts in the blood forming cells of the bone marrow invading the blood, this form of Leukaemia would normally affect adults.
CLL affects the body’s white cells. Over time these abnormal lymphocytes build up, in the lymphatic system. The condition tends to be monitored over years before any treatment is given.
Chronic forms of Leukaemia get worse over time and normally affect adults.
When travelling abroad, if you are receiving active treatment for your leukaemia especially chemotherapy this may affect your immune system making you more prone to infections. Also certain vaccinations are not recommended for people travelling with leukaemia. We recommend that you should contact your GP for advice before travelling.
